KFC Westmoreland Street hit with closure order after 'dead rodent carcasses' found

A KFC restaurant in Dublin city centre was closed after inspectors discovered "dead rodent carcasses" in the venue.

The popular fried chicken outlet on Westmoreland Street was served with a closure order on May 29, 2023, by the HSE under the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020. A report from the HSE states authorities found dead rodent carcasses in the suspended ceiling of the ground floor and in the basement.

Additionally, rodent droppings were sighted throughout the premises in the attic, the suspended ceiling above the office and kitchen and the basement. The report went on to say the construction of the premises "did not permit adequate pest control" after holes were spotted in internal walls, ceilings, and the attic roof. The closure order was lifted on June 1, 2023.

A separate closure order was served to Maneka at 43 Dawson Street on May 31, 2023. Some of the reasons for the closure order included thawing food at unsafe temperatures, surfaces were not effectively cleaned, a chef was spotted not washing his hands properly after handling raw beef and chicken, and more.

The enforcement order was served under European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020. It was lifted on June 1, 2023.

Additionally, Long Thanh, a restaurant at 14 North Strand Road, was hit with a closure order under the FSAI Act 1998 on May 22, 2023. One of the reasons for the enforcement order include a blocked train which was full of stagnant foul water with filthy odours and accumulations of flies.

Another reason stated was that the premises was found to be in "extremely dirty conditions" with food debris on the floor, as well as raw chicken trimmings spotted under the equipment. The flooring was covered with congealed dirt and grease. The closure order was lifted on May 26, 2023.

Furthermore, Seascapes Restaurant in Saint Ita's Hospital on Portrane Road was closed under FSAI Act 1998 after health inspectors spotted rodent droppings and a rodent caught in a trap under the servery counter. Additionally, a defective cover was observed on a drainage pipe and gaps were found under the external doors next to the restaurant which could have acted as possible access points for critters. The closure order was lifted on May 15, 2023.

Takeaway, New Century on 6 Prospect Road, Glasnevin, was served with a closure order under FSAI Act 1998 after authorities found no food safety management system in place. Furthermore, there was no evidence of handwashing by the staff.

The sink drain was found to be blocked with food remnants, among many other issues. The closure order was lifted on May 8, 2023.

FSAI Chief Executive Pamela Byrne said: "Care should be taken when preparing all foods, particularly for high-risk foods like sushi which needs specific food safety controls. Improper defrosting of food has been noted by Environmental Health Officers. Defrosting should only be undertaken in refrigerators, as otherwise bacteria can multiply at room temperatures."
