KFC starts using cabbage in Australia after lettuce price hits $10 each

KFC says it has started to substitute cabbage for lettuce in some of its menu items in Australia following a shortage that has seen the price of the salad item hit $10 each- close to £6. A global food crisis caused by post-pandemic supply chain problems, spiralling energy costs and the war in Ukraine has been made worse in Australia by floods.

On its website KFC Australia said: "Due to the recent floods in NSW [New South Wales] and QLD [Queensland] we're currently experiencing a lettuce shortage. So, we're using a lettuce and cabbage blend on all products containing lettuce until further notice."

"If that's not your bag, simply click 'Customise' on your chosen product and remove Lettuce from the Recipe," it added.

Earlier this year KFC Australia suffered a shortage of chicken thanks to Covid. Restaurants across the UK had similar supply chain problems last year.

Global problems have caused McDonald's in parts of Asia - including Japan and Singapore - to run out of fries.
