The secret mix of ingredients that goes into KFC's original chicken recipe has long been a source of fascination, with many diners struggling to replicate that same iconic taste at home. Now one fan claims to have unearthed one of these famed secret ingredients, to the disgruntlement of many.
As previously reported by the Daily Star, a woman, from New Zealand has recently shared a pic of the 'Colonel Sanders' Recipe' seasoning pouch, said to be used "exclusively for use in the KFC system". According to the packet, the main ingredient is in fact Monosodium Glutamate, best known as MSG, followed by "Herbs and Spices, Salt and Garlic Powder".

The woman shared the snap on the Aotearoa Kai Gatherers Facebook group, writing, "It's like salt on crack." The reveal has since caused a bit of an uproar among New Zealand fans, who have been left divided on the topic.
One person wrote: "I'm certain that MSG has never been banned, and all the myths surrounding it (being) bad for you have been disproven."
However, another shuddered: "Yuck, no wonder I always feel sick afterward."
According to advice provided online by Healthline, MSG is a flavor-enhancing additive that was considered to be a toxic ingredient during the 1960s. However, contemporary evidence has dispelled this myth and instead indicates that MSG is in fact perfectly safe when consumed in moderation.
The KFC website states: "Some of our food does contain MSG but rest assured, it's only present at levels that are safe for the general population. It's a recognised flavour enhancer that also occurs naturally in foods such as meat, fish, milk, vegetables, fruits, and cheese."
A KFC spokesperson has since told the Daily Star: "Our finger lickin' chicken’s 11 herbs and spices are a famously guarded secret. But we will let you in on the fact that MSG is not one of them in the UK."
