Head coach Steve Cooper believes developing a sense of unity was key to Nottingham Forest navigating the “ruthlessness” of the Premier League.
The Reds secured survival with a game to spare on their return to the top-flight after a 23-year absence. It made for a party atmosphere among the travelling contingent for Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace, with players and staff taking a moment to celebrate in front of the away end after their final-day 1-1 draw.
The step up in divisions came with many challenges, not the least of which was the significant dressing room overhaul following promotion. But Cooper - while also managing at this level for the first time - was able to create a strong team spirit, as well as deepening the bond forged with supporters.

“I knew everything was going to be a step up. I knew everything was going to be at a higher level. It has been that and more,” said the Welshman.
“It is a ruthless league with zero room for error. At times where we’ve given that room, we’ve been punished. Other times when we haven’t, we’ve succeeded.
“While living and breathing all of that, we’ve been trying to put a team together and build a culture, build a togetherness and build a spirit. For the players to become what they’ve become, in terms of the togetherness in amongst the way of how we put it together in the summer, is really special.
“It’s such a together group of players and staff. We push each other so hard every day, but at the same time we do support each other. And we do it with a smile and a laugh as well.
“That’s where you want to be, knowing you’ve given everything, while enjoying each other’s company. That normally comes over the course of two or three-plus years. We’ve done it instantly.
“It’s been a privilege to be part of that. When you get the support we’ve been given as well, both home and away, that brings you even more together.
“It’s allowed us to compete in the Premier League. It’s the best league in the world for a reason, and that’s because everything has to be so, so high.”
