Kevin McStay has emerged as a surprise candidate for the Mayo senior football manager’s job.
McStay is believed to have assembled an impressive back room team which includes former Mayo manager Stephen Rochford and highly respected coach Donie Buckley, who has worked extensively with Mayo in the past.
Also part of his proposed set up are ex-Mayo star Liam McHale, who McStay played alongside and worked with at club and county level in the past and Damien Mulligan, a Crossmolina clubmate of Rochford’s who has managed Belmullet in recent years.

McStay, who was crushed by the disappointment of missing out on the Mayo job to Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes in 2014, had said that he was finished with inter-county management after stepping down as Roscommon boss in 2018.
Rochford was thought to have been a stronger contender for the manager’s job himself having recently departed Donegal, where he worked under Declan Bonner as coach, but his presence on the McStay ticket is a significant boost to the well-respected pundit’s hopes of landing a job he has long coveted.
Mike Solan, Ray Dempsey and Declan Shaw are also in the running to succeed James Horan.
