Kevin De Bruyne hails ‘biggest legend’ Colin Bell after 2022/23 home Man City kit tribute

Kevin De Bruyne has called late Manchester City great Colin Bell as “the biggest legend” to play for the club.

The Belgian has been compared to ‘The King’ by a number of club supporters - something that the player says he is flattered by. Bell made played nearly 400 games between 1966 and 1979, lifting the FA Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and First Division title among four other trophies in that time.

City have paid tribute to Bell - who passed away in January 2021 aged 74 - in next season’s home strip. The kit pays homage to the design of his era and includes an image of a crown in the inside collar in reference to the hero.

Current City icon De Bruyne, who has won the club's April player of the month, said being compared to Bell was a sign that he was “doing well”. Speaking to club media, the 30-year-old said: “I’ve not seen a lot of him.

“Obviously I know he’s probably the biggest legend for City. If you have a stand named to you then that says it all.

“To be compared is obviously a nice thing because he’s one of the greatest players who have ever played for this club. That means I’ve been doing well in my time here so hopefully we can continue that.”
