Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Minister Mons Joseph on Sunday said the government would take urgent steps to address severe waterlogging issues reported in various parts of the state capital following recent rains.
Joseph said the situation, particularly in areas such as Thampanoor and Chakka, was being treated with utmost seriousness.
He said the chief engineer of the irrigation department had been directed to submit an immediate report on the reasons behind the flooding and water stagnation.
According to reports submitted by senior officials, the irrigation department had already granted preliminary approval sought by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the cleaning and restoration of the Parvathy Puthanar and Amayizhanjan canals, the state water resources minister said.
He further stated that the government was prepared to hold discussions with all stakeholders, including the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, on implementing measures to address the issue.
The minister also held discussions with ministers K Muraleedharan and C P John on the steps required to resolve the waterlogging problem in the city.
Following the discussions, the government decided to convene a high-level meeting on June 2 at 4 pm in the chamber of the water resources minister at the Secretariat.
The meeting, to be attended by the three ministers and senior officials, will review the causes of the waterlogging, assess ongoing measures, and decide on further remedial steps, a statement said.
