Kerala: Probe team close to identifying killer gang

KOZHIKODE: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the murder of CPM activist K Haridasan at Punnol near Thalassery in the wee hours of Monday is learnt to have got information about the gang that carried out the murder.

The probe is learnt to be focusing on a group headed by Thalassery native Atmajan, which police say has links with the BJP. Forensic experts conducted examination at a house near the house of Haridasan on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Punnol native Nijil Das, who was taken into custody and released later, was interrogated on Thursday as well. Also, three other Punnol natives were also questioned by the SIT on Thursday. Police have taken into custody the mobile phone belonging to civil police officer Suresh attached to the Kannavam police station who was quizzed on Wednesday. The CPO was interrogated after it was found that he had talked over WhatsApp with K Lijesh (BJP mandalam president and municipal councillor) who was arrested on conspiracy charges in connection with the case. The call was made just half an hour before the murder of Haridasan.

CPO Suresh, who is a close relative of Lijesh, is learnt to have told the investigation team that Lijesh could have misdialled the number.

On Tuesday, police had arrested Lijesh (37), RSS members K V Vimin (26) and Amal Manoharan (26) and Gopalpetta native M Sunesh alias Mani (39) on conspiracy charges. They were remanded in custody later.

The remand report submitted before the Thalassery JFCM court had said that the four arrested had hatched a conspiracy to kill Haridasan out of political enmity and the murder was carried out by another team of BJP workers. Also it says that one of the accused had given the statement that they had planned to target Haridasan earlier on February 14.
