Kerala: Forest department rescues tiger cub which fell into a pit in Wayanad

KOZHIKODE: A six-month-old tiger cub, which fell into a pit at a private property on the fringe of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary at Mandamkolli near Sultan Bathery, was rescued by forest department officials on Friday. Efforts are on to reunite the female cub with her mother, whose presence was confirmed in the nearby area by the department on Friday night.

Residents found the cub inside the pit on Friday morning after which department officers reached the spot. Chief forest veterinary officer Dr Arun Zachariah said that the cub was tranquilized and rescued. He said that the young tiger didn't have any injury. The cub was taken to the forest veterinary centre at Sultan Bathery and given treatment.

By Friday night, the cub was brought to the same location from where it was rescued as part of attempts to reunite it with its mother.

"The mother tiger is at a nearby locality and looking for her cub. We have taken the cub out of the cage and kept it in a spot where the mother has been located. We hope the tiger will take back her cub at night," Zachariah said.
