Kerala: Babu doing well, might be discharged today after tests

PALAKKAD: Power minister K Krishnankutty said Babu, the youth who was rescued by the army on Wednesday after he was trapped in a crevice on Kurumbachi Mala for over two days, is likely to be discharged from the district hospital on Friday. He came to the hospital on Thursday to meet Babu.

District medical officer Dr KP Reetha informed that Babu's condition is satisfactory and that he has started eating food. Some more tests will be done on Friday and if the results are satisfactory, he will be discharged later in the day, she added. The youth said that his leg injury is healing and with adequate rest and food, he is feeling better.

'Babu wanted to hoist a flag'

Meanwhile, Babu's neighbours - two school students who had accompanied him on the trek - said "Babu was determined to climb atop the hill and hoist a flag. After reaching the half-way point, we were tired and thirsty and asked Babu to return. He forced us to climb and we did so for some more time. We were so tired that we returned soon. We waited for him; but he kept on climbing."

Babu said there is a temple atop the hill which he wanted to see and that people used to go there every year on a festival day, they added. The students returned home, ate food and slept. They woke up on hearing the sound of an ambulance and police vehicles the next day and realized that Babu had slipped and fallen into a crevice in the hill. Then they saw the photos he had sent from his mobile.

The students said that it was around 10am on Monday, when they were playing near their home, that Babu persuaded them to accompany him on a trek to the nearby hill.
