Kentucky boat registrations due by April 30

Kentucky boat owners have a deadline coming up: they have to renew their registration with a county clerk’s office by the end of this month. Fayette County Clerk Susan Lamb said depending on where boats are kept, boat owners do have options.

“The boat registrations are renewed annually in April, boat renewals may be processed in the county of residence or in the county of dockage.”

Lamb said boat owners receive two decals – one for each side of the boat. She said some boat and car owners may not realize when their property is assessed.

“The property tax for the vehicles, trailers and boats are assessed by the PVA on January 1 of each year. So you are responsible for the property tax for any boat registered to you on January 1.”

Lamb said that means people who sell their boat or vehicle the next month are still responsible for taxes on it. As is the case with motor vehicles, boat registrations can be renewed by mail.
