Kenny Miller insists Rangers ran out of ideas against Servette just like they did in the league defeat to Kilmarnock.
Michael Beale’s side will take a slender 2-1 lead to Switzerland for their Champions League qualifying second leg next week but are disappointed they don’t have a greater advantage.
James Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers scored during a dominant start before Chris Bedia notched a penalty just before the break on Wednesday evening.
And even though the visiting team’s David Douline picked up a second caution on the hour mark, Rangers were unable to capitalise.
And former Rangers striker Miller admits the second half at Ibrox was a hard watch.
He said: “It was a tale of two halves, the goal at the end of the first half changes the picture.
“They got their chances by simple play, some really good intricate play through the middle initially then getting it wide.
“In the second half they ran out of ideas, very like the weekend when they were trying to get back into the game against Kilmarnock or even trying to break them down to take the lead against Kilmarnock.
“They’ve just not got that spark at the moment to play the way that Michael would like them to play, which is quick, combination play, a lot of movement - but this team were dogged.
“This tie is very much alive but Rangers need to look at the first half, if Rangers get to that level they know they will get chances.
“Going away from home you can maybe alter the style a bit and there will be counter-attacking chances.
“It’s win but it’s how they played in the final third, there was a lot of low key stuff and mistakes made."
