Kenneth Branagh seems to be making his way through every Oscar category.
The 61-year-old filmmaker added three new Oscar nominations to his resume Tuesday, scoring nods for best picture, best director and best original screenplay for “Belfast.”
Branagh has now been nominated for seven Oscars across his career, all in different categories; he was previously nominated for best director and best actor for “Henry V,” best live action short film for “Swan Song,” best adapted screenplay for “Hamlet” and best actor in a supporting role for “My Week with Marilyn.”
He has never won.
“It’s a long way from the streets of Belfast to the Academy Awards. Today, I think of my mother and father, and my grandparents — how proud they were to be Irish, how much this city meant to them. They would have been overwhelmed by this incredible honor — as am I,” Branagh said in a statement Tuesday after his nomination.
“Given a story as personal as this one, it’s a hell of a day for my family, and the family of our film. I thank Academy voters for their incredible and generous recognition. We are honored to be among the other extraordinary nominees in a remarkable year for films, and I salute the superb cast and crew of ‘Belfast’ for their exceptional talent, comradeship and kindness.”
“Belfast,” starring Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Morgan and Jude Hill, is the coming-of-age story of a young boy growing up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the beginning of The Troubles in 1969.
