Kennedy Unveils Voluntary U.S.-Caught Seafood Label but Offers No Data for His Claim About Rejected Imported Shrimp

Shoppers may soon see a new U.S.-Caught Seafood label at fish counters after the Trump administration launched a voluntary labeling program and a new website, Seafood.gov, on Oct. 23. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the label at a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, where he said fish caught in the U.S. is of higher quality than European-caught and imported seafood. He also made a specific claim about imported shrimp that federal documents released the same day do not address.

"No European country will take them, so they ship them all over here," Kennedy said of shrimp, The Hill reported. He did not cite data showing that shrimp rejected in Europe is rerouted to U.S. stores, and neither the White House fact sheet nor NOAA's announcement addresses that claim.
