Celebrities, cultural icons, and surprise guests are coming together for the annual Kennedy Center Honors celebration in Washington. This year's recipients of the prestigious lifetime achievement award include director Francis Ford Coppola, the Grateful Dead, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt. Additionally, the historic Harlem theater, The Apollo, known for nurturing generations of Black artists, is also being honored.
The gala, held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, features personalized tributes with performances and testimonials from fellow artists. The medallions were presented during a traditional ceremony at the State Department on Saturday night.
One of the highlights of the event is the surprise tribute performances, often kept secret from the honorees themselves. In the past, artists like Cyndi Lauper have gone to great lengths to maintain the element of surprise, as was the case when Lauper performed Cher's hit song, “If I Could Turn Back Time,” without Cher's prior knowledge.
Many of this year's honorees have previously participated in tributes to their friends and colleagues at the Kennedy Center. For instance, Coppola spoke during Martin Scorsese's induction in 2007, Sandoval paid tribute to his mentor Dizzy Gillespie, and Raitt has honored artists like Buddy Guy and Mavis Staples. Raitt's connection to the Kennedy Center dates back to the 1970s when her father, Broadway performer John Raitt, was part of a tribute to composer Richard Rogers.
The tribute to the Grateful Dead is expected to serve as a memorial for the band's founding bass player, Phil Lesh, who passed away in October at the age of 84.
Notably, this year's ceremony is anticipated to be free from political controversy. During the previous administration, Kennedy Center officials navigated challenges due to the strained relationship between honorees and former President Donald Trump. Trump chose not to attend the ceremony during his entire first term, in part due to objections from honorees like Norman Lear. In contrast, President Joe Biden is set to host a reception for the honorees at the White House and plans to attend the Kennedy Center ceremony.
The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony will be broadcast on CBS on December 22.
