Kelly Clarkson’s children have been begging her not to date.
The singer, 42, has son Remington ‘Remy’, eight, and daughter River, 10, with her talent manager ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, 47, who she filed for divorce from in 2020, and has now opened up about her kids’ reaction to the prospect of finding new love.
She told KOST 103.5 about how she's “enjoying being single” in the face of her children’s fears over her dating: “They constantly bring it up – ‘Please, we don’t want you with anybody else’.
“They’re young, it’s hard to picture their mom with someone else other than their dad.”
But Kelly said she refuses to take their fears onboard and tells them: “Hey, I love you guys but Mommy needs lovings too.”
She has previously said on Angie Martinez’s ‘IRL’ podcast she makes it a ritual to check her kids are coping after going through her divorce.
Kelly added: “I ask my kids every night when we’re snuggling and I put them to bed, ‘Are you happy? And if you’re not, what could make you happier?’ “Especially the past two years – it kills me (but) I want them to be honest so I don’t ever say, ‘Oh God, don’t tell me that’.
“But a lot of times it would be like, ‘I’m just really sad. I wish Mommy and Daddy were in the same house’.
“They’re really honest about it. I’m raising that kind of individual.
“I just sit there and I’m like, ‘I get it. I’m from a divorced family as well. I get it. That sucks. But we’re going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us’.
“I think (it’s important to be) communicating with them and not treating them like an adult, because they’re not, but not treating them like a child.
“They’re not small feelings. Those are huge feelings, and those are huge emotions.”
