Keith Long says Bohemians fans are entitled to boo recent results

Keith Long says Bohemians fans are entitled to voice their opinion after some booed the team for the second game running.

And the Gypsies boss also accepts there is a ‘little bit of disgruntlement’ around the club after one win in seven games this season.

According to Long, player confidence is low but he feels the team could be one win away from flipping that on its head.

Bohs blew a 1-0 lead against Derry City at Dalymount Park on Friday and lost to an injury-time James Akintunde winner.

Fans booed on the full-time whistle, having done so after the 1-1 draw away to bottom side UCD before that.

The Gypsies will hope for an upturn in fortunes when they face Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on Tuesday.

Quizzed on the booing, Long said: “You'd expect that here. There’s a little bit of disgruntlement around the club.

“They are entitled to voice their opinion. They have a certain outlook on things and that's fine, we have to respect that.

“It's our job to put a winning team on the pitch and unfortunately we haven't been doing that so far.

“There’s an expectation at the club, which is fine. It's a big club and a great club to work for.

“The fans have been very, very supportive of me, by and large, for the eight years that I've been here.

“I'd like to think they have identified with what we’ve tried to do on the pitch and that they recognise we’ve earned the right to have that expectation.

“They haven't been getting on our backs or the players' backs because I think we have done a reasonable job up until now.

“We have to turn things around and I think we are confident in our ability to turn it around.”

Long, who slammed his team’s defending against league leaders Derry, continued:

“We have responsibilities to try and perform the best we can.

“We try not to burden the players with that, we try to let them go and play. Ultimately it is my responsibility for the run of form we're in and where we sit currently.

“The players are a little bit low on confidence at the minute and a large portion of that is dictated by results. It doesn't help to concede in the 93rd or 94th minute.

“We can't feel sorry for ourselves. As best we can, we have to learn from the mistakes we have been making because we are suffering a little bit right now.”

But Long has stressed that it is not easy rebuilding a squad after so many high profile departures over the winter.

Captain Keith Buckley moved to Australia and last season’s top scorer Georgie Kelly left for Rotherham. Ross Tierney joined Motherwell and Rob Cornwall went to America.

Andy Lyons moved to Shamrock Rovers and St Pat’s snapped up Anto Breslin while Keith Ward joined Dundalk.

Long said: “It's very, very hard to replace those players and I'm not trying to make excuses, it's just the reality of the situation.

“It's my job to recruit the players and to find better players if we possibly can. We’ve worked night and day trying to get better players in.

“We were in for a lot of players throughout the league who went to different clubs for whatever reasons and that's their choice.”
