KEIR Starmer is to deliver a keynote speech on Tuesday in which he is expected to tell the UK that “things will get worse before they get better”.
The Prime Minister will make clear that the return to Parliament next week will not mark a return to business as usual.
Starmer has already faced criticism for the speech with Labour accused of “shamefully picking up where the Tories left off”.
Here’s all you need to know.
How can I watch the speech?
Starmer’s speech is likely to be available on all major broadcasters, including the BBC and Sky News.
It will be held in the Rose Garden of Downing Street where Starmer will speak to an audience of around 50 people he met throughout the General Election campaign.
The Prime Minister is expected to deliver his speech at 10am on Tuesday.
It is also worth keeping an eye on the official UK Prime Minister’s Twitter/X page for any updates.
What will Starmer say?
It was widely reported on Sunday that Starmer (below) is to say “things will get worse before we get better” in his speech.
He will outline the UK Government’s priorities ahead of the return to Parliament and also address recent far-right violence in England and Northern Ireland.
The Prime Minister is expected to say: “Next week, Parliament will return. The business of politics will resume, but it will not be business as usual.
“Because we can’t go on like this anymore. No more politics of performance, papering over the cracks, or division and distraction. Things are being done differently now.
“When I stood on the steps of Downing Street two months ago, I promised this Government would serve people like you – apprentices, teachers, nurses, small business owners, firefighters – those serving the community and the country every day.
“I promised that we would get a grip on the problems we face, and that we would be judged by our actions, not by our words.”
When does Parliament return?
Both the UK and Scottish Parliament will return on September 2.
