Sir Keir Starmer today said Jeremy Corbyn “will not stand as a Labour candidate at the next general election”. Asked by reporters whether he could say “categorically” whether or not his predecessor as leader Mr Corbyn will stand for the party at the next election, Sir Keir said: “Let me be very clear about that: Jeremy Corbyn will not stand for Labour at the next general election, as a Labour Party candidate.
“What I said about the party changing, I meant, and we are not going back, and that is why Jeremy Corbyn will not stand as a Labour candidate at the next general election.”
In December the Labour leader said he could not see how Jeremy Corbyn could stand as a Labour candidate at the next election, and confirmed that today. Former Labour leader Mr Corbyn had the whip removed over his response to the scathing Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report into antisemitism in the party.
