Keir Starmer roasts Rishi Sunak with killer line as he takes fight to new Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak stepped out for his first session of Prime Minister's Questions today and immediately came under fire.

The new Prime Minister has taken over from Liz Truss after her disastrous six weeks in charge. He is taking on a chaotic and worrying economic situation and has made clear that difficult times lay ahead.

Mr Sunak has already caused controversy after he reappointed Suella Braverman to the position of Home Secretary that she resigned from just under a week ago. Ms Braverman quit Ms Truss' cabinet after admitting to a serious security breach in using her personal email account to share sensitive Home Office documents.

It didn't take Labour leader Keir Starmer long to raise this matter. In his opening question he asked: "Was his Home Secretary right to resign last week for a breach of security?"

In response, the new Prime Minister said: "The Home Secretary made an error of judgement, but she recognised that and raised the matter and recognised her mistake - that's why I was delighted to welcome her back"

But Starmer wasn't done there, he stated: "Yesterday the Prime Minister stood on the steps of Downing Street promising integrity and professionalism but then with his first act he appointed a Home Secretary who was sacked by his predecessor for deliberately pinging around sensitive Home Office emails from her personal account.

He added: "I worked with Home Secretaries to take on terrorism and serious organised crime, I know how important it is that a Home Secretary whose professionalism and integrity are beyond question. Have officials raised concerns about his decision to appoint her?"

Mr Sunak did not respond directly to the question, instead launching an attack on Labour, accusing the party of being "soft on crime and in favour of unlimited immigration."

Starmer then gave his conclusion to how the Home Secretary landed back in her job after resigning over the breach. He said: "We can all see what's happened here, he's so weak that he's done a grubby deal, trading national security because he didn't want to lose another leadership election. There's a new Tory at the top but as always with them its party first, country second."

The Labour leader then moved onto another obvious line of attack for the new Prime Minister. He referenced a video shot during the previous Tory leadership race, where Mr Sunak was heard to boast about diverting funding away from deprived areas and towards more affluent Conservative voting communities.

But it was his final remarks that landed the biggest blow. He pointed out that Mr Sunak has become Prime Minister without a vote from the public and only after he lost out to Ms Truss in a vote of the Conservative membership.

He added: "Even his own side know he's not on the side of working people. That's why the only time he ran in a competitive election, he got trounced by the former Prime Minister, who herself got beaten by a lettuce. So why doesn't he put it to the test, let the people have a say and call a General Election."
