Keir Starmer has negative approval ratings less than one month after election

KEIR Starmer already has negative approval ratings, less than one month after the General Election.

According to the latest YouGov poll, Starmer’s popularity has gone down – with just 40% of people saying they have a favourable view of the new Prime Minister.

This is down four points from the previous survey on July 17 and 18.

Meanwhile, Starmer’s unpopularity has increased by five points, with 49% saying they have an unfavourable view.

The poll took place on July 30 and 31 and surveyed 2233 adults from across the UK.

In Scotland, 46% of people said they had a favourable view of the Prime Minister, whilst 48% said they had an unfavourable view.

The results of the poll show that Starmer’s approval ratings have gone from 0 to -9 in the space of two weeks, although this remains higher than his pre-election ratings where he scored -18 on July 2.

It comes following a challenging few weeks for Starmer (below), after Labour voted to keep the two-child benefit cap in place and far-right riots have continued to spread across England.

Whilst the vast majority of Labour voters still have a favourable view of the Prime Minister (79%), this is an eight-point drop since the General Election took place.

Over the same time period, negativity towards Starmer from Labour voters has increased five points, to 15%.

Starmer is not the only Labour figure who has seen their popularity decline since entering government.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves (below) has also lost popularity after announcing a series of cuts to plug a £22 billion black hole in public finances.

The number of people holding an unfavourable view of Reeves has risen 12 points to 37% since mid-July.

The portion of the public with a favourable view of Reeves remains unchanged, declining one point to 26%.

YouGov suggested that this means the increase in unpopularity is coming from people who were previously unaware of Reeves or had not formed an opinion about her, suggesting that the Chancellor’s announcement on Monday made a negative impression on voters.
