It seems Rev Dr Paul Chamberlain thought year 6 children were old enough to be sceptical about Santa (Ho-ho-no! Children in tears after vicar tells them Santa is not real, 14 December). This is a bit rich from someone who still believes in the virgin birth and resurrection in adulthood. And with significantly less direct first-hand evidence than the average child has for the existence of Santa.

• Mariana Mazzucato discussed economic policy with Labour prior to the election. There’s little to suggest they listened to her, as Rachel Reeves says the financial sector is “the crown jewel in our economy” (Economists and policy experts warn Reeves against City deregulation, 16 December). The “value extractors” will be laughing all the way to the bank.

• Your article (Keely Hodgkinson: free spirit and cold-blooded killer in super spikes, 18 December) says: “After winning a stunning silver in the Tokyo Games as a teenager, Piers Morgan…” Did he really? Maybe while he was dangling on a participle? Sorry to nitpick – the article was lovely!

• Before 1066 and All That (Letters, 17 December), there was Monarchs of Merrie England, Roland Carse’s humorous history in verse, illustrated by W Heath Robinson. Still on my bookshelf!

• Recent correspondence on newts (Letters, 15 December) took me back to the 80s and fond memories of convivial company as a member of the New Edinburgh Wine Tasting Society.
