Katy Perry has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the upcoming 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. The event is scheduled to take place next month, where Perry will also be performing. This award has previously been bestowed upon renowned artists such as Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott.
This year's ceremony will mark Katy Perry's return to the MTV VMA stage for the first time since 2017 when she not only performed but also hosted the award show. Throughout her career, the pop singer has clinched five VMAs, with her first three wins dating back to 2011. These wins include video of the year for 'Firework,' best collaboration, and best special effects for 'E.T.' featuring Kanye West.
Bruce Gillmer, the chief content officer of music at Paramount+ and president of music, music talent, programming, and events at Paramount, praised Perry's musical prowess and cultural impact, referring to her as a global phenomenon who has captivated audiences worldwide with her innovative creative vision.
Leading the nominations for the 2024 VMAs is Taylor Swift, who has garnered a total of 10 nominations. Eight of these nominations are for her music video 'Fortnight,' with additional nods in the artist of the year and best pop categories. Following closely behind Swift is her collaborator on 'Fortnight,' Post Malone, who has received nine nominations. Malone is nominated alongside Swift in eight categories and secured his ninth nomination for his country hit 'I Had Some Help,' featuring Morgan Wallen.
The 2024 MTV VMAs are set to be broadcast live on September 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern from the UBS Arena on New York's Long Island. Fan voting across 15 gender-neutral categories will commence online on Tuesday and conclude on August 30. Notably, voting for the best new artist category will remain active throughout the duration of the show.
