Many fans declared in 2024 that Katy Perry was the best-dressed guest at the Met Gala — despite the fact that she didn’t actually attend. Instead, AI-generated photos of the pop star-slash-astronaut went viral on social media, even fooling her own mother, and the same occurred in 2025.
Katy finally made a non-AI appearance at the fashion fundraiser this week, walking the famous steps in a custom Stella McCartney gown. She paired the all-white ensemble with a silver mask, which became the subject of countless memes online as she opened and closed it on the red carpet, and many fans quickly noticed a rather bizarre detail.
Social media users spotted that one of Katy’s white gloves had a sixth finger, which she confirmed in a statement shared to Instagram on Wednesday was an intentional nod to the previous AI photos of her.
“Her glove features a sixth finger, quietly referencing the viral spread of Al-generated fan art that depicted her on the Met Gala red carpet in 2024 and 2025, despite her not attending,” the statement said.

The post also explained that she collaborated with fan artist @salikatycat to share a “visual rendering” of her outfit on the carpet before she actually arrived.
“[This turned] her appearance into performance art that blurs the line between reality and fabrication, and transforming digital misinformation into a playful tradition on fashion’s biggest night,” the statement continued.
Hidden meaning behind Katy Perry’s 2026 Met Gala outfit
As for Katy’s headpiece, the post said it was designed to be “a literal and symbolic reflection that invites the observer to consider that their perception of others can mirror their own internal world, and conversely mask truth”. Deep!
The satin gown and train were also cut from repurposed tailoring fabrics, so no new materials were used to make the dress.
Meanwhile, fans have also shared theories online about the burn marks on her train, with many speculating that it intentionally looked like a “burnt wedding dress” because she ended things with her fiancé, Orlando Bloom.
Others saw it as a promo for her upcoming single “Watch It Burn”, which is very reminiscent of when she wore a 500-foot train featuring the lyrics to “Woman’s World” in Paris. IYKYK.
Say what you want about Katy Perry, but she always puts a huge amount of thought and effort into her outfits. Whether that results in a good look, however, is completely up to you.
