Veteran independent MP Bob Katter has apologised for an incident involving a security attendant at Parliament House.

Mr Katter told AAP he was rushing to get into the chamber for an important vote on Tuesday when the incident occurred.

"I had my foot in the door, and this really is pedantic people trying to stop us from exercising our democratic right," he said.

"I was hurrying into the chamber to get in for an important vote, a vote to try and stop wealthy people from earning additional tax breaks while everyday Australians are struggling."

At the end of question time in the lower house on Wednesday, Speaker Milton Dick invited Mr Katter to make a formal statement.

"I must apologise to the house for my actions yesterday in attempting to enter the chamber after the order of the doors to be locked," Mr Katter told parliament.

"I also apologise to the security attendant who was closing the doors and I acknowledge he was doing his job as directed by the Speaker."

One MP was overheard saying after that statement: "What was that about?"

Further details of the incident are being sought.
