Katie Taylor sees similarities between Amanda Serrano's boxing journey and her own

Katie Taylor can see many similarities between Amanda Serrano's boxing journey and her own personal one.

Both fighters hail from small island countries that are rich in boxing history and they both come from working class families.

The ever-so-humble Taylor admits that tonight's first ever female main event at Madison Square Garden is just as much Serrano's moment as her own.

The defending champion said: "She's been around for a long, long time. She's been under the radar for a long time as well and this is her moment on Saturday night.

"It's funny that we both come from very small nations that are very strong boxing nations.

"She is obviously coming from the heritage of Miguel Cotto and these kind of fighters and I'm coming from the likes of Barry McGuigan, Steve Collins and Wayne McCullough.

"We bring all that heritage and all that pride into the ring with us on Saturday night."

Both fighters share a massive passion for the sport of boxing and tonight's bout is monumental for females in the sport.

And as well as the similarities, Taylor admits there are some differences too.

She added: "There are definitely a lot of similarities between us, a lot of differences between us as well I'd say.

"We both love our sport. We haven't got anything handed to us that's for sure. We've worked very, very hard behind the scenes for many years.

"I don't think either of us are really interested in the media side of things. We're just interested in being the best fighter in the world."
