Katie Taylor eyes Croke Park fight after becoming RTE Sportsperson of the Year

Katie Taylor is eyeing a 'spine-tingling' fight at Croke Park in 2023 after being crowned the RTE Sportsperson of the Year for a third time.

The Bray boxer, who also won the award in 2012 and 2020, has enjoyed another sensational year in the ring.

But the undoubted highlight was her thrilling victory over Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Talks ever since have been centred around a potential rematch between the pair at Croke Park, and Taylor says she would love the chance to finally fight on home soil as a world champion.

She said: "We are definitely pushing for a rematch at Croke Park. Just the thoughts of making my homecoming fight at Croke Park is spine-tingling.

"Talks are definitely under way right now, and I think we are a long way off from that fight happening at Croke Park, but I hope it does happen.

"It would be an awful shame if it doesn't happen. The thought of fighting in front of 80,000 people gives me goosebumps.

"So I do hope it's going to happen soon."

Elsewhere, rowing duo Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy were crowned the RTE Sport Team of the Year.

The RTE Sport Manager of the Year went to Vera Pauw after she led Ireland to World Cup qualification, while sprint sensation Rhasidat Adeleke was named the RTE Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year.

Finally, Cork GAA legend Jimmy Barry-Murphy was inducted into the RTE Sport Hall of Fame.
