Katie Price wants to train as paramedic - but criminal record could destroy new career dream

Katie Price has revealed she wants to train as a paramedic because of her experience with son Harvey.

The former glamour model reckons she's got a "gift" that would ensure she would be a successful medic if she were to follow a new path, reports OK.

However, according to the Mirror, she may not be able to follow her dreams as the job would require her to undergo an 'enhanced criminal record check'.

The 43-year-old avoided jail in December after pleading guilty to driving while unfit to drive through drink, using a motor vehicle in a public place without third party insurance and driving while disqualified.

Harvey, 19, has Prader-Willi syndrome, septo-optic dysplasia, a learning disability and autism and his famous mum dedicated much of her time to looking after him before he moved out last year.

Tonight a new BBC documentary starts which follows the teenager as he moves on to college and the start of a more independent adult life.

Katie told the Radio Times that she thinks she's got the experience that's needed to be a paramedic because of her round-the-clock care she provided for her beloved son for nearly two decades.

Touching on the struggle some people have to help those with special needs, the mum-of-five said: “They don’t know how to act. It can be daunting. You just have to talk to people like you do in the street.”

The star also revealed she was training to be a nurse before she found fame and she counts one of her main strengths as being able to calm someone down through a “meltdown”.

She said: " “All the time. I would say I was a carer. That’s why I was training to be a nurse when I left school.”

“I would train as a paramedic now if I could find the time."

Addressing her bond with her eldest son, Katie went on: “Whatever people think of me, whether they love me or hate me, you can’t fake that relationship. I know I’m a good mum and he’s a credit to me. No one can take that away from me. Not a lot of people would cope like I have.”

Katie was sentenced to a 16-week prison sentence after her drink-driving charge and was suspended for 12 months.

The Mirror reports anyone hoping to train as a paramedic is officially "required to undergo an enhanced criminal record check, as they may come into contact with children and vulnerable adults," it was stated online.

"Having a criminal record, caution, warning, or conviction may put off prospective employers."

However, the severity of the crime will be taken into account.

Tonight Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next, follows the teenager as he says goodbye to Katie and settles into college.

Katie recently said she'd like to make three years worth of programmes with her son as he loves being in the spotlight.

Due to Harvey's disabilities, finding the right residential college was tricky, but after searching they found the perfect place in the £350,000 per year college National Star in Cheltenham, which he has been funded to live at full-time.

Speaking about what's next for Harvey, Katie said: "Harvey loves being on camera, Harvey loves being on YouTube, Harvey loves filming himself.

"He’s like me – what you see is what you get. If he doesn’t want to be filmed one day, he’ll say ‘no, not today’, but then ten minutes later, he’ll want to be on film so that’s what it’s like. I'd never force him to do anything."

She added: "He loves it, I showed him the programme back, and he sat there just listening and watching it for an hour.

"Now trust me, Harvey wouldn’t sit there and watch something for an hour – he was focused, and he just loved it after!"

Katie’s revelations come after she was criticised for allowing Harvey to sign up to do a personal appearance at a nightclub with her.

Acapulco Nightclub in Halifax, West Yorkshire, took to social media to announce the news about the mother-son duo, saying tickets will be going on sale for the event today, Monday, March 7.

They wrote: “We are excited to announce that we have a Live PA coming soon with Katie & Harvey Price!

“More details to be released soon with tickets going on sale on Monday 9am.”
