Kate Middleton's poignant tribute to Princess Diana as she kicks off US tour

Kate Middleton has made a heart-warming tribute to the late Princess Diana as she begins her US tour alongside Prince William.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have arrived in Boston for William's global environmental project the Earthshot Prize awards, which they will attend later this week.

As they arrived Kate gave a touching nod to her mother-in-law by wearing a pair of sparkling sapphire and diamond earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana.

The new Princess of Wales was spotted wearing the stunning jewels as she disembarked her British Airways flight at Boston Logan International Airport on Wednesday.

The two-tiered flower-shaped earrings stood out alongside her sleek blue Alexander McQueen suit.

They were passed down from Diana to Kate, who also wore the sentimental earrings at the Trooping the Colour back in June.

Diana wore the earrings herself on several occasions, including at the 1996 Met Gala in New York City and during a visit to Canada in 1991.

Kate has paid tribute to Diana by wearing other items of her jewellery several times before, including earlier this month when she wore her Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, which had been loaned to Diana by the late Queen for her wedding day.

Before her death in 1997 Diana had made it clear that she wished for her jewellery to be passed down to her sons so that one day her daughters-in-law would be able to wear them.

In a letter of wishes alongside her will, she wrote: “I would like you to allocate all my jewellery to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it.”

Kate and William's trip to the US marks their first official visit abroad since taking on their new titles as the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The royal couple will spend three days in Boston before the Earthshot Prize ceremony on Friday, where they will hand out five £1million prizes to incredible winners all aiming to solve the world’s biggest environmental problems.

As they touched down in Boston, William made his own poignant tribute to his late grandmother.

He said: “Catherine and I are delighted to be back in the United States and are extremely grateful to Governor Baker and The First Lady of Massachusetts for their warm welcome into Boston.

“On this, our first overseas visit since the death of my grandmother, I would like to thank the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston for their many tributes paid to the late Queen.

"She remembered her 1976 bicentennial visit with great fondness."

Speaking about the Earthshot Prize, he added: "My grandmother was one of life's optimists. And so am I.

"That is why last year we launched the Earthshot Prize with the ambition to create a truly global platform to inspire hope and urgent optimism as we look to save the future of our planet.

“To the people of Boston, thank you. I’m so grateful to you for allowing us to host the second year of the Earthshot prize in your great city."

The visit also marks the first time that Kate and William will be in the US since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to California after leaving their royal duties in 2020.

Despite this, reports suggest that the royal couples have "no plans" to reunite.
