Kate Middleton's £6 John Lewis hack keeps her comfy in heels all day

Since she became the Duchess of Cambridge over eleven years ago, Kate has firmly cemented her position as the Royal Family's in-house style icon. Of course, her love for fashion is what caught Prince William's eye in the first place, when he watched her strut down the catwalk in a dress that left little to the imagination during their university days.

Over the years, some of Kate's clothing pieces have sparked huge frenzies, with many rushing out to snap up whatever the Duchess has been most recently photographed in. One wardrobe staple the mum-of-three has become particularly known for in the last decade or so is her heels.

Despite often having to stand on her feet for hours at a time, you would find it tricky to spot the Duchess of Cambridge at a public engagement without a pair of heels on. Obviously, wearing heels for hours is tricky business, so that's why the 40-year-old employs a few handy items to keep her comfortable, according to a royal etiquette expert.

Speaking to Insider, Myka Meier claims that Kate is a particular fan of two products. To prevent her feet from slipping from her heels, the Duchess wears £6 John Lewis non-slip tights, which have gel strips on the bottom of each foot to help your feet grip into your shoes.

Fans of The Firm noticed Kate donning a pair of tights similar to her trusty John Lewis numbers during a royal tour of Canada back in July 2011, a few months after she married Prince William. Under her Tabitha Simmons heels, clear, gel-like strips can be spotted poking out.

Meier also claims that Kate likes to wear Alice Bow insoles, created by British designer Rachel Bowditch. Sold for £18.95, the slip-in leather soles are designed to 'cushion' your feet so you are able to painlessly wear heels for hours on end.

An anonymous source told Vanity Fair in 2015 that Kate had 'ordered a couple of packets' of the Alice Bow insoles. According to the source, Kate 'thinks they are great'.

Despite there being no official royal protocol relating to footwear, the Queen has set a convention about stockings in public. In a previous conversation with Insider, royal expert Victoria Arbiter said: "You never see a royal without their nude stockings. I would say that's really the only hard, steadfast rule in terms of what the Queen requires."

Whilst on royal duty, royal women tend to wear tights, although they are allowed to be a little more flexible with their shoe choice, as heels are not suitable for every gig. At more casual events, Kate can be spotted in trainers and flats, and she often opts for open-toe and strappy heels for evening occasions.

One thing you will find it hard to catch Kate, or any other royal woman in, though, is wedges. An unnamed source told Vanity Fair in 2015: "The Queen isn't a fan of wedged shoes. She really doesn't like them and it's well known among the women in the family."
