Kate Garraway took viewers on an emotional journey to transform the garden at her home for her family after husband Derek Draper's Covid battle. The Good Morning Britain star was seen creating a 'wellbeing' garden at her north London home in ITV's Love Your Garden which aired on Tuesday night (March 15).
It comes after Kate, 54, opened up her home to the cameras as she changed the inside of her home in order for Derek, also 54, to return home after spending more than a year in hospital after being struck by coronavirus.
"The garden needs to be more than a space to go into. I really want to grow some plants to improve our health and wellbeing," Kate said on the programme.
As she began work on her garden, the TV and radio star said: "I love the idea that there's plants that look good, smell good and do good. I hope it works," she said, as she started work on her garden, which will feature three different plant beds - one for plants that can be used to make tea, another with medicinal plants, including those with antioxidants and perennials, as well as a separate aromatherapy bed."
Kate battled the elements to be able to complete her medicinal, tea and aromatherapy beds and she was also seen paying a visit to Kew gardens where she learned about the medicinal benefits of plants.
She was also joined by son Billy, 12, as she battled on with her mission before commenting: "This is going to be so much more than I thought it was going to be. I’ve taken the garden that’s a place of family fun and turned it into something that’s the way our family has to live now."
The programme saw Kate taking her husband, who is suffering serious complications after contracting Covid in March 2020, on a stroll around the sprawling garden.
Taking to Instagram before the show aired, Kate shared a picture of her, Derek, and Billy in the luscious green space. "At last I can share with you a wonderful personal challenge on @itv at 8pm tonight - can you #GrowYourselfWell?!
"It started out as a kind of therapy - gardening & nature helped distract me when life felt on the edge and then, thanks to the team @loveyourgarden, I took it a step further & turned our garden into a beautiful factory for physical healing too.
"They even helped me carry Derek outside so he could see the fruits of our labour too - a very emotional moment . I really hope you feel inspired & comforted by the programme - do let me know!!! #gardeninglife #hope #heal."
Kate's GMB co-star Susanna Reid was among the first to comment, writing: "This is so amazing. You all are," as fans gushed over the 'special' photo.
