Kate Garraway shares message after reaction to Caring for Derek documentary

Kate Garraway has thanked her fans for their support following her second documentary on husband Derek Draper.

Derek, a former political adviser, first became seriously ill after contracting Covid-19 in March 2020.

The 54-year-old is now free of the virus but has suffered long-lasting damage to his organs and requires care at home.

In a follow up-documentary, which aired last week, the programme followed Derek leaving the hospita l and beginning to receive round-the-clock care at home.

In one clip, Derek was seen hugging his son in an emotional moment, which Kate described as making her "burst into tears".

She said: "I didn't actually see this until I watched the footage, and it's the first moment that Derek moves his arm... it makes me cry even now.

"That is the first moment we've seen him be able to activate a movement prompted by emotion, not just someone going 'Can you just move your arm to the left or right'."

Following the documentary's launch, Kate said she has been 'moved' by the number of people who have contacted her.

Sharing a post on Instagram, Kate said: "Well, what a frightening week and I am sure I'm not alone in hugging my loved ones close, grateful - as our hearts go out to the people in Ukraine fearing for their lives.

"Despite the horrifying news unfolding all around, I've been so moved by how many of you have got in touch about #caringforderek (available now on the@itvhub).

"Do keep sharing your stories of hope & your challenges too - when the world feels out of control there is something so powerful in standing together - we can make a difference.

"There are some wonderful groups that have helped me@access_care @carers_uk @carers.trustwho are all great sources of support."
