Kate Garraway gives heartbreaking update on Derek as he fights illness in hospital

Kate Garraway has revealed she is fighting to get her husband Derek Draper home, as he remains in hospital after developing sepsis.

Former political lobbyist Derek, 55, was rushed to hospital after developing the life-threatening infection earlier this year - two years after his body was ravaged by coronavirus.

Kate has been sharing insights into her daily juggling of life on TV and being a carer for her husband, as he fights to improve his health.

Giving an update on his health battle, the Good Morning Britain presenter revealed there has been a setback and has been staying at the hospital.

"Derek is back in hospital after developing sepsis that again threatened his life and we are again fighting to get him home," the 55-year-old said.

Of being a carer, she wrote for The Sun : "We all clapped for carers with vigour during the pandemic because they were saving lives right before our very eyes, but the trouble is, when the direct fear of life-or-death passes, this celebration gets quickly forgotten, but the caring goes on.

"It’s not sexy or the stuff of movies, like pulling someone from a burning building or giving mouth to mouth, but it’s no less vital to life."

Kate and Derek have been married since 2005, and she has been tirelessly caring for him as he battles ill health.

After contracting Covid in March 2020, Derek was the longest Covid patient in hospital before being released home, but he was rushed back a couple of times for some treatment.

Kate even had to take time off work to be by her husband's side.

She revealed how she's been "frustrated, emotional and depressed" caring for Derek, but desperately "wants him to survive".

The TV presenter recently shared an intimate insight into her life and marriage in her ITV documentary 'Finding Derek' which showed how much her family's life had changed over the last two years.

Speaking to the camera she said: "In the documentary, you saw me frustrated, depressed, emotional.

"And I've been all of those and more in recent weeks and months and more.

"Because that's the thing with caring, you want it to carry on because you want the person to be surviving and still with you, so that you CAN care for them, but there isn't an endpoint and it doesn't get any easier."
