Kate Garraway says Derek could die 'within three days' without care

Kate Garraway has revealed Derek Draper could die "within three days" if he didn't receive full care.

The 54-year-old broadcaster opened up on her husband's condition and gruelling road to recovery in tonight's Caring For Derek documentary.

The political lobbyist spent 374 days in hospital as he fell seriously ill after contracting coronavirus in March 2020.

Caring For Derek started with Derek's poignant return back to his family home as he was welcomed by Kate and their two children.

Kate revealed in the documentary that Derek's brain and body has been so impacted by covid that he needs support 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

The documentary provided an insight into Kate's daily routine as she helps care for her husband.

The broadcaster revealed Derek relies on carers to survive and would be dead within three days without aid.

She said: "It's life or death care still. If Derek didn't have somebody with him, he would never have any nutrition go into his body or water. He would be dead within three days."

Kate also admitted she was "struggling" with loneliness as she helps care for her husband.

She said: "It's really indescribable. I can sort of see him but he's absent and you just feel very much on your own all the time."

The documentary ended on a hopeful note as Derek travelled to Mexico to take part in a new medical trial.

Kate said: "If we have a love and he can be a dad to the children in a whole new way, then that's life, isn't it? A collection of moments. And that's what we have to fight for. To give people a chance for the best moments they can get."

Viewers following the show on Twitter took to the social media platform to praise the Good Morning Britain anchor as an inspiration.
