Kate Garraway's daughter Darcey Draper stunned at the National Television Award as she joined her mum at the showbiz bash while her dad suffered a setback in his recovery.
The Good Morning Britain presenter thanked her husband for his “incredible fighting spirit” as she won the authored documentary prize at the National Television Awards for a second consecutive year. Kate and the family won for their second film, Caring for Derek.
It highlighted the work of families and the care service for those who have suffered like Derek has .The former political advisor is believed to be the worst-affected living Covid patient in the UK after spending 13 months in hospital between March 2020 and April 2021 after contracting the virus.
Ahead of her appearance at the NTAs, Kate, 55, shared how Derek was back in hospital after saying he is still "damaged" from the effects of the virus.
She told The Sun : "Derek is back in hospital after developing sepsis that again threatened his life and we are again fighting to get him home." Kate was speaking in support of The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards next month and shared her praise for those carers who have helped Derek, who she married in 2005.
But Kate shared the family's hope of having Derek home soon during her acceptance speech. The mum-of-two appeared gobsmacked when her name was announced, as did Darcey. The TV and radio star was seen rushing over to Kelsey Parker, the widow of the late The Wanted star Tom, who was posthumously nominated in the same category for his brain tumour documentary.
The pair shared an emotional embrace after Kelsey was seen tearing up at seeing her husband on-screen as the nominees were read out.
Getting up on stage, Kate said: "Well, I really didn’t expect this. So the mercy of that is this is going to be brief because I have very little prepared. I want to thank all of you. I brought my daughter here Darcey, we managed to speak to Derek – he is back in hospital at the moment fighting on so incredibly and we’re hoping he’s coming home again."
Turning attention to her daughter and son Billy, who remained at home, Kate said: "But Darcey represents all the family, Billy, all the Drapers in Chorley, everybody. Amazing, amazing."
She emotionally praised her husband for commenting on the country's care crisis. "I want to thank Derek for his incredible fighting spirit. I want to thank ITV for being so brave to put something which actually is touched in all the incredible documentaries about care.
"We have a care crisis in our country. But we don’t have a crisis of love." She went on: "The professional carers are extraordinary; the millions who care for people they love are extraordinary. And I think that’s probably why you voted for this because you know it’s all of you we all feel alone. We all need some care and love. So thank you so much. It means the world to all those people."
Kate previously told the PA News Agency that the nomination for the documentary was "bittersweet", but that the response to her film had been "fantastic".
