Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper 'rushed to hospital for kidney operation'

Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper was rushed back to hospital for an operation on his kidneys.

The Good Morning Britain star is said to have remained by her husband's bedside last night, as he recovered from the operation to help repair damage to his kidneys. Derek has been in and out of hospital since contracting coronavirus back in March 2020. He caught the virus over two years ago, but has been incredibly poorly since, with the virus having caused so much damage to his organs.

Doctors have reportedly reassured Kate that Derek's procedure is routine, and that there "was no alternative but to operate". It has been described as another "hammer blow" for Derek and the whole family.

A source told The Sun: "This is another hammer blow for poor Derek. He is giving the fight against Covid his absolute all, but his kidneys have suffered some pretty serious damage. Doctors explained there was no alternative but to operate.

"Of course Kate and the family are worried but she’s been reassured the procedure itself is routine. Everyone has everything crossed, and Kate is being her usual stoical self and keeping everything running, business as usual, on the home front."

The Mirror has contacted a representative for Kate Garraway.

It is the latest in a long line of heartache for the family, after Derek was brought home after months in hospital. However, he had to return to hospital recently after a battle with sepsis. Kate took some time off work to be with him.

Kate recently returned to Good Morning Britain and detailed the hard times her family had been through.

Speaking on the show, she said: "I dramatically disappeared and haven’t been here for three weeks now… We were on air and Derek had come out of hospital, he’s been going in and out of hospital for a while for looking at ways to tackle the damage caused by Covid back in 2020. But we haven’t really had any sort of medical eruptions, and then he just was really unwell."

She had explained how the hospital dash was incredibly dramatic, but that doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to help.

"So it was really dramatic; brilliant work by the A&E, absolutely extraordinary because when you’ve got sepsis, the big challenge is (to) find the source of infection quickly and get the right antibiotics and his blood pressure was so low," she added.

Sources confirmed to The Mirror previously that Derek was back in hospital.

The insider said: "Derek is back in hospital in a very serious condition but the family knows he is in the best hands. Kate is doing everything she can for her husband. He comes first and so work will have to take a back seat this week."
