Kate Garraway 's teenage daughter paid tribute to dad Derek Draper as she made her red carpet debut on Thursday night.
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate gave an update on her husband's recent health scare at the National Television Awards, as the mum-of-two won her second award for her documentary work chronicling Derek's ongoing bid to fully recover from Covid-19, after catching the virus in early 2020.
Kate was joined by daughter Darcey, 16, on the red carpet on Thursday night before accepting the authored documentary prize for the second year in a row, this time for Caring For Derek – with the TV star going on to reveal Darcey's touching words for dad Derek as she gushed with pride over her mum's win.
Derek's devoted wife beat Julia Bradbury's Breast Cancer and Me, Tom Parker's Inside My Head, Paddy and Christine McGuinness' Our Family and Autism and Katie Price : What Harvey Did Next to take home the honour of Best Authored Documentary for her ITV programme on Thursday night.
Kate and Derek's eldest daughter wore a fitted red cowl neck gown with thin straps as she attended the showbiz event with her mother, while Kate opted for a metallic gold wrap dress which featured a pleated skirt for her big night.
During her acceptance speech an emotional Kate shared that Derek is continuing to "fight" and will be home soon after another stint in hospital, adding: "I’ve got my daughter here, Darcey. We managed to speak to Derek, he is back in hospital at the moment, fighting on so incredibly. We’re hoping he is coming home again soon.
"Darcey represents all the family. I want to thank Derek for his incredible fighting spirit, we love you. I want to thank ITV for being so brave to put something which actually is touched in all the incredible documentaries, about care."
On Friday morning's edition of Good Morning Britain, Kate reflected on Darcey being her plus-one for the event, revealing: "It was incredibly emotional – a last minute thought to bring Darcey because I found out I had a plus one.
"It was really lovely because of course she’s right there at home, as is Bill – he’s a bit young. And so for her to come, and I just love the fact that she was just so excited to be there.
"People were asking saying, 'Are you proud of your mum?', she kept saying, 'Yes – and my dad!' Every single time!"
As she hosted her radio show on Smooth FM shortly after appearing on Good Morning Britain, Kate shared Darcey's sweet reaction to Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi's performance at the National Television Awards.
"When he was playing loads of confetti fell to the ground and she [Darcey] said 'Mum I think I’m having a dream'," Kate recalled to her listeners. "It was lovely to see the beauty of something like that through her eyes."
Derek fell victim to Covid-19 in early 2020, and was left critically ill and hospitalised for more than a year.
The former lobbyist returned home from hospital in April 2021 but still requires care and assistance and is regularly readmitted to hospital, as he struggles to return to full health following first contracting the viral disease.
