Kate Garraway 'fears she might not spend anniversary with Derek' after health battle

GMB presenter Kate Garraway is said to be devastated at the thought she might not spend her wedding anniversary with husband Derek, as he continues to battle long covid.

Former political advisor Derek, 55, is said to be the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK after spending 13 months in hospital.

After months in a coma, Derek faced serious illness due to the impact of the virus on his body including issues with his lungs, his heart and his kidneys.

Recently, Kate, 55, confirmed her husband had been rushed back into hospital, after he took an "unexpected and frightening turn for the worse", leading to her taking time off the show and other work commitments.

The mum-of-two said Derek was finally "back on the right side of it" in an update earlier this month, as she returned to work after three weeks off.

Insiders say the couple's upcoming 17th wedding anniversary, on September 10, could be an emotional time for the former I'm a Celeb contestant.

A source told Closer magazine: "Their wedding anniversary is just days away and with Derek's health so volatile, Katie is devastated that they may not be able to celebrate together at home.

"Kate knows he may be in hospital, but fears doctors could potentially advise her to stay at home."

The source went on: "The anniversary has been hanging over Kate's head for a while now and she had initially hoped it would be something to look forward to, and even try to life everyone's spirits- especially Derek's."

The radio presenter is hoping the pair will receive some good news soon, so she can have a small celebration with Derek, the insider said.

Kate's representatives declined to comment when approached by The Mirror.

Earlier this month, it was announced Kate had secured a second National Television Award nomination.

A year on from her winning an NTA for the first documentary, Finding Derek, Kate's follow-up doc is now nominated in the same category.

Kate's documentaries follow life for her and her family, following Derek's serious health battle after he contracted Covid-19 in March 2020.

Last week, her GMB co-star Robert Rinder paid tribute to Kate in the wake of the award nod.

The pair spoke about how they've never worked together before, with Robert saying: "I just want to say more than anything else, you are a model of the possibility against a backdrop of darkness of being light in every sense.

"I also want to say, I'm gonna use language my grandmother would use, I am kvelling, I am so proud of you today."

The Judge Rinder star went on: "Your amazing documentary Caring For Derek is being shortlisted for a National Television Award, and to use the platform you have for change, for authenticity just makes me proud to know you.

"I'm not gonna cry but I am just very proud."

A shocked and moved Kate told him: "That's so lovely! I'm gonna cry myself!"
