Kate Bush tops UK singles chart for first time in 44 years after Stranger Things success

Singer Kate Bush has taken the top spot on the UK singles chart with Running Up That Hill after the song featured in Stranger Things.

First released 37 years ago, Running Up That Hill has recently experienced a huge surge in popularity after playing in the latest series of the popular Netflix show. The song is also number one in Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Sweden, and has reached its highest ever position in the US charts at number four.

It’s the first time the song has reached the top spot in the UK charts, having only climbed to number three when it was first released in 1985. It also marks the first number one for Kate in 44 years, which she last achieved with her iconic debut single Wuthering Heights, The Mirror reports .

Running Up That Hill was played during a dramatic scene in Stranger Things which saw Max, played by Sadie Sink, escape the clutches of villain Vecna - and streams of the song have shot up since the episode aired on Netflix, as well as going viral on TikTok. 63-year-old Kate shared her excitement at the song’s success in a statement last week.

"How utterly brilliant!” the singer wrote on her website, thanking Stranger Things producers the Duffer Brothers. “It’s hard to take in the speed at which this has all been happening since the release of the first part of the Stranger Things new series. So many young people who love the show, discovering the song for the first time.”

Kate added in a later statement. “I’ve never experienced anything quite like this before!” The song’s newfound popularity means that she now holds the title of the music artist with the longest ever gap between number one singles, as well as being the oldest ever female artist to take the top spot in the UK charts.
