Actress Kate Beckinsale would have preferred if her daughter, Lily Sheen, had become a surgeon rather than an actress herself, Lily has revealed.
The young actress, 23, whose father is Welsh actor Michael Sheen, is set to make her big movie debut in the upcoming action-comedy film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and plays the character of Addy, the daughter of top actor Nick Cage (loosely based on Nicholas Cage).
But while both her parents are supportive of her acting career and encourage her to "become the person that I want to be," mum Kate would actually have preferred if Lily had avoided the arts and had gone into medicine, she said.
"[My mum] definitely would've preferred I became a surgeon," Lily told People magazine.
"But I don't think that was on the cards! You wouldn't want me to be doing any surgeries, and I think she knows that!"
"Both my parents, they would've accepted whatever I did, which is incredibly lucky to have," she added.
Speaking with People magazine, Lily said her experiences growing up with well-known actor parents massively differed to that of her character Addy in the The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent film.
"Of course there are definitely similarities, obviously. But I think what really opened the character up for me, as an actor, was to start noting the differences," she said.
"Seeing what would my life be like if my parents hadn't been this way, if they hadn't been as loving and supportive of me, and of the person that I wanted to be.
"That was really exciting for me to be able to play, and to see this alternate-reality version of myself and what my life could have been if things had gone slightly differently."
Whilst Lily had always wanted to go into acting, she was "stubborn" when she was growing up, she said. So she tried to dodge others' presumption that she'd go into acting and tried to focus on something else.
"[I] wanted to shirk the expectation that I could end up in film," she said. "[I] wanted to act from a young age, for sure; it just took me a second to get there."
As a young wannabe actor, Lily would often shy away from her parents' advice but now appreciates everything they do for her.
She said: "When I was younger and more immature, I was more like, 'I don't want any help.' But I think I've now grown to really appreciate how much of a lucky opportunity I've had, in having those parents, and just to have a helping hand through the industry."
"Not a lot of people have parents that are understanding and have a respect for the arts," she added. "My parents are great about pushing me out and letting me fly and become the person that I want to be. To become the actor that I want to be."
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is released on April 22, 2022 in the UK
