Kate Middleton and Prince William swim with SHARKS in Belize during royal tour

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took a break from royal duties to go scuba diving with SHARKS in Belize during their Caribbean tour.

The royal couple donned their scuba gear to explore the underwater wildlife in the country, which is home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

Video of the pair diving was posted to the couple's official Twitter account and came as they left Belize to head to Jamaica, where they are expected to fly into a storm of protests over the monarchy's role in slavery.

The footage shows them jumping off a boat and going under the water as sharks and tropical fish swim past.

They also can be seen making the OK signal and making their way to the sea bed before emerging from the water.

William said it had been “really fantastic” and hailed the “wonderful work” of those helping to ensure the coral and fish are protected.

He said: “(It’s) really fantastic to see the underwater environment here in Belize, and what wonderful work they’ve been doing to protect the coral and the fish life.

“Belize’s work on marine protection is world-leading, which is crucial when you’re protecting the world’s second largest barrier reef, and in fact it’s a Unesco World Heritage site.

“And it’s clear to see the Belizeans value their environment, whether it’s the marine environment or the land environment.

“It’s great to see that their commitments are going further and further, and we should support them and value their efforts to protect both the marine and the land environments.”

The silky footage was taken by celebrity photographer Matt Porteous, who is on the trip and paid for privately by the couple.

The private tour took place on Sunday with diving instructor Edward Betancourt and his daughter Marisha Betancourt but released on Tuesday.

The footage of the couple was released as they boarded a flight from Belize to head to the next stop of the tour - Jamaica.

They waved to those who had come to see them off from the airport before they boarded an RAF Voyager plane bound for Jamaica.

Kate looked chic in a a pair of white trousers and matching heels, which she teamed with a vibrant red jacket and small handbag. She wore her hair pulled back off her face.

Their arrival will come as it is reported that the tour could be marred by further protests in Jamaica, as campaigners accuse the Queen and her predecessors of perpetuating slavery.

As the country marks its 60th anniversary, a coalition of Jamaican politicians, business leaders, doctors and musicians have called in an open letter for the British monarchy to pay slavery reparations.

The apparent opposition in Jamaica comes after the tour began in controversial circumstances when opposition from villagers in Belize, who cited a range of issues including objections to the Cambridges' helicopter landing site, forced a royal trip to a farm on Sunday to be scrapped.

It was replaced with a visit to a chocolate producer before the royals travelled to the cultural centre of the Garifuna community in the village of Hopkins.
