Prince William and Kate Middleton share treasured photos to mark Queen's 96th birthday

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid a special tribute to the Queen as she celebrates turning 96 today.

Kate Middleton and Prince William called her an 'inspiration to so many' as they shared the touching family photos to mark her day.

The royal couple also posted an emotional snap with Prince Philip sitting on the sofa with seven of their great-grand children.

The picture of the Queen and her late husband was taken by Kate herself.

Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte are seen with Peter Phillip's daughters Savannah and Isla. Zara and Mike Tindall’s children Lena and Mia are also sat with them.

"Wishing Her Majesty The Queen a very happy 96th birthday today!" they posted on social media.

"An inspiration to so many across the UK, the Commonwealth and the world, it’s particularly special to be celebrating in this #PlatinumJubilee year."

She will see in her big day at Sandringham, it has been confirmed.

Last night, the beaming Queen released a photo herself to mark her birthday.

The brand new portrait shows Her Majesty standing proudly in between two horses wearing green coat with the colour a subtle nod to her beloved Philip.

The new photograph of the Queen was taken in March in the grounds of Windsor Castle by Henry Dallal, who was commissioned to take an official portrait of her to mark her 90th birthday.

On the Queen’s left is the pony Bybeck Nightingale and on her right is Bybeck Katie, and both animals will feature in A Gallop through History - a spectacular equestrian display showcasing horses from across the globe.

Her love of horses will be celebrated over the coming months.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show will mark the Platinum Jubilee with A Gallop through History, being billed as a “personal tribute to our monarchy”.

It will feature more than 500 horses and more than a thousand performers taking the audience on a journey from Elizabeth I to the Queen.

Her love for the equine world is something she shared with her mother, and she has been breeding and racing horses for more than 60 years.
