West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady has labelled the Hammers’ disallowed goal at Chelsea last week as the worst decision she’s seen in 30 years.
The Hammers thought they had snatched a point in the 90th minute of the London derby when substitute Maxwel Cornet pounced on a loose Edouard Mendy fumble to level the tie and make it 2-2.
However, following an intervention from VAR, the goal was disallowed by refereed Andy Madley after recommendation from VAR official Jarred Gillett, with Jarrod Bowen judged to have fouled Mendy while jumping over him after chasing down a loose header from Reece James.

At full-time of the defeat a week ago, manager David Moyes described the decision as “ridiculously bad” and it led to the referee’s body PGMOL admitting that the decision was an incorrect one.
Speaking in her weekly column for The Sun, Brady, who has been vice-chairman of the club since January 2010, felt that the decision to rule out the goal was the worst she has experienced in 30 years of football, having previously been on the board at Birmingham City prior to her move to east London.
“At West Ham we are still angered by the VAR farce that cost us a point at Stamford Bridge last weekend,” said Brady. So much so that I insisted the Premier League add VAR and referee standards to their next agenda.
“The decision to disallow our goal on Saturday at Chelsea was one of the worst I have seen in over 30 years in football. It was, in the words of Alan Shearer, a ‘terrible, disgraceful decision, ridiculous.’
“Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said the verdict, reached after nearly four minutes of VAR confusion, was correct. And a lot of good it did him. Truth is that VAR is below an acceptable standard, is bringing the league into disrepute and is financially damaging for clubs.
“West Ham lost a point through officials’ incompetence and whilst it will not get us back the point, we at least have to try and prevent such incompetence happening again.”
