Karnataka Technical advisory committee suggests fine for not wearing mask

BENGALURU: The state’s technical advisory committee (TAC) on Covid-19 has made a formal recommendation that those not wearing mask be penalised. A final decision is expected to be taken by the government.

TAC chairperson Dr MK Sudarshan confirmed that the panel made the recommendation. TOI had reported last week that TAC was expected to suggest this in the wake of Covid cases increasing steadily and scientific analysis showing Omicron sub-lineages — BA.4 and BA.5 — as being responsible for the same.

Sources in the health and family welfare department said health minister K Sudhakar was expected to hold a meeting to discuss the Covid scenario in Bengaluru — which like earlier accounts for the most number of cases in the recent surge — on Monday. “The minister may also discuss the mask issue at the meeting,” said a source, who could not confirm if a decision would be taken then.
