The state government has decided to set up an expert committee to decide on uniforms and dress codes in colleges.

In the wake of at least six students from the Government PU College for girls refusing to enter the classroom without the headscarf, the college had written to the government seeking directions.

Bhat, who is the president of the college betterment committee, said: "In the wake of six students at Government PU College for girls raising objections to the uniform and dress code, we had written to the government seeking clarity as to whether uniform is required in the institute or not. Uniform has been compulsory in the college since 1985. The government has decided to set up an expert committee to decide about uniform and dress code in colleges. Till the expert committee takes a decision, the college in Udupi has been asked to maintain the status quo with regard to uniform and dress code. Hence, I thank primary and secondary education minister B C Nagesh and chief minister Basavaraj Bommai for taking initiatives to find a permanent solution for the uniform issue.”

The College betterment committee and parents held a meeting on Tuesday and decided to convince the parents of those six students, who are not willing to attend classes without hijab, he said.

"Now the government order is very clear that they should attend classes without wearing headscarf till the new expert committee appointed by the government takes a final decision," Bhat said.
