Karnataka HC stays order on compulsory Kannada for degree students

BENGALURU: Citing the stand taken by the Centre, the Karnataka HC on Wednesday formally stayed the operation of two notifications issued by the state government last year making the study of Kannada as a compulsory subject for degree students.

In the affidavit dated January 15, 2022, the Centre had clearly stated there is no mention of any compulsion of language in National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. Reiterating the same, additional solicitor general MB Nargund submitted that the regional language cannot be made compulsory in the implementation of NEP-2020.
