Karnataka HC registry asks petitioner how he'll be hit by halal boycott call

BENGALURU: The Karnataka high court on Thursday asked a petitioner, who approached it on the campaign against halal meat, to comply with objections raised by the court registry, including one calling upon him to show how his personal rights are affected by the issue.

Justice SG Pandit said the matter will be listed after the petitioner replies to the objections. If a petition is to be entertained by a single bench, one of the elementary requirements is that the petitioner has to establish how his rights are affected. Besides maintainability of the petiton, the registry's objections can include clerical issues like the petition's page or para numbers not being in order and documents produced not being legible or certified.

The petition has been filed by Mohammed Khaleelulla, a human rights activist and resident of Nagamangala town in Mandya district.

The petitioner referred to several reported statements of political and right-wing leaders on the issue of halal meat. There have been repeated calls for boycotting the business of minorities, which, according to him, directly contravenes with Articles 17 and 19 of the Constitution and the authorities have so far failed to take any action.
