KOPPAL: At least five persons were killed on the spot and four others sustained injuries after the SUV they were travelling in collided with an unknown vehicle at Bhanapur in Karnataka's Koppal district on Saturday midnight.
According to sources, the nine members of Koppad family of Binnal village were returning in a Scorpio from Koppal after attending a birthday celebration.
The deceased have been identified as Devappa Koppad (60), Girijamma Koppad (55), Paravva Bheemappa (25) of Binnal village; Shantamma Hanumappa (35) of Timmapur village; Kasturi Nagappa (25) of Harlapur village.
The injured have been admitted in government hospitals in Kukanur and Koppal.
Koppal SP Arunangshu Giri said that police are collecting details about the mishap.
"A spare part of the other vehicle is found on the spot. It is suspected that a lorry or tipper rammed into the Scorpio. We are checking with toll gate personnel and night duty police of Koppal and neighboring districts" he added.
