If there's one interior trend that refuses to let up, it's 'organic modern' style. Lauded for its simplicity and connection to the natural world, the design has taken over homes around the world. One such fan of the trend is none other than supermodel Karlie Kloss.
The former Victoria's Secret Angel recently posted a photo of her living room on her Instagram page – the space is simply and neutrally decorated yet provides visual interest via textural elements, like her wood and stone coffee table and shag rug.
While glass and steel furniture and decor can, at times, feel cold and uninviting, the beauty of the organic modern trend is that natural elements like wood and tartan provide a dose of warmth. This look is 'warming' our spaces through its cozy hues and textures, and it's unsurprising that design experts encourage us all to follow suit.
'The difficulty with modern furnishings is that they often lack warmth, tactility, and a hand-crafted sensibility,' explains Greg Roth, senior interior designer at CarbonShack.
'They may be sleek and beautiful, but they are not always comfortable or inviting. Introducing natural elements – natural fiber fabrics, organic shapes, rich wood – is a no-brainer way to bridge the gap between sleek modern and comfy organic.'
Roth mentions that bare or otherwise plain spaces with minimal architectural details can highly benefit from natural inclusions, like a wood living room shelving unit or woven hemp accessories.
'The contrast between the man-made, controlled architecture and the nature-made materials is heightened; you notice more, and perhaps better appreciate, the beauty of the natural forms and textures,' he explains. 'The contrast also can help underscore and strengthen our connection to the natural world. Anytime we bring the outside indoors – be it natural wood or fabrics, or even nature-inspired patterns and motifs – we reinforce our interdependence with the environment.'
While intentionality is important when implementing organic materials, Roth says it's important not to be too precious about furnishings.
'There really are no hard and fast rules,' he states. 'If you have – or find – a vintage modern leather chair that’s worn beyond repair, conventional wisdom might dictate that reupholstering in anything other than a new leather would be blasphemous. But if you envision it redone in a gorgeous, warm, nubby organic wool boucle, hand-woven hemp, or antique French linen, go for it! Adding that natural fiber touch to the chair’s clean lines may be just what it needs to freshen it up and propel it into today’s eco-conscious aesthetic.'
