A Kansas City woman recently shared a wild dating story on TikTok, detailing a bizarre encounter that serves as a stark reminder to always Google your dates for safety, no matter how charming they seem. Maddie, @maddswatts on TikTok, recounted her experience with a man she matched with on Facebook Dating, revealing a series of red flags that left viewers both shocked and amused.
The man appeared incredibly handsome, so much so that Maddie suspected he might be a catfish. However, their chats were great. Soon, he gave her his phone number and even sent her a selfie, which confirmed his identity.
The man explained that he was only in town for work for a few weeks and was staying in a huge Airbnb with several coworkers. He invited Maddie and a friend to come over on a Friday night for games and a bonfire. She thought it sounded potentially fun but was still apprehensive.
Maddie decided to Google the man immediately
The very first result that popped up was an arrest record from two years ago. He had been arrested for allegedly robbing a pawn shop. Maddie noted that he hadn’t served any jail time but was currently on probation for the incident.
Further research revealed he owed a significant amount of money to multiple people as a result of the robbery. She was positive it was him because his mugshot was clearly displayed on the website, all from a simple search of his first and last name and his hometown.
She asked him, “It could be pretty dangerous going to an Airbnb with a bunch of guys we don’t know, do we need to do background checks on y’all?” He simply laughed it off, assuring her she was safe and in good hands. Undeterred, Maddie decided to be direct. She texted him, “So I Googled your name and it said you went to jail. What did you go to jail for?”
He responded, “Yeah, long story short, we can talk about it more in person. I’d love to call you after work and tell you, but I got caught up in the wrong crowd. I was friends with the wrong guy, he was on drugs. I was in the car with him when he robbed this pawn shop. He’s still in jail, I’m still on probation for the incident. I paid a lot of his fees for him, but I basically was just involved with the wrong person.”
Maddie found this explanation somewhat viable at the time, and her subsequent research actually confirmed parts of his story. She found documents corroborating that he was indeed in the car and that the other man involved was still incarcerated.
When Friday night arrived, Maddie and her friend decided to go to the Airbnb. She had spoken to him multiple times on the phone and they had even Facetimed. She even remembered posting right after one Facetime session, exclaiming that she had just spoken to “the love of my life”. Upon arriving at the Airbnb, Maddie was charmed by the house itself. She described it as “so farmhouse” with “good bones,” even taking pictures of hand-painted doors and admiring the antique decor.
Her first impressions of him in person were largely positive
He opened the car door for her. After dinner and a game of pool, they went to sit on the back porch. It was there that things took a scary turn. Maddie explained that he talked her ear off. She felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stories he shared, urging viewers to have grace for her reactions. He recounted a series of truly wild and disturbing alleged events.
First, he claimed his ex-fiancée had almost killed him and then even killed his dog. He said he’d discovered his fiancée cheating with his best friend. When he confronted her, she allegedly attacked him with a “fire prodder stick” and used it on his dog. He claimed his parents found him two days later “sitting in a puddle of blood.”
Then he said his parents are billionaires, but he was raised by his grandparents on a farm. He explained that his parents were “the country club type,” and he preferred the lifestyle of his grandparents.
The stories continued to get stranger, particularly about his job. He was in Kansas City for a “fine company,” and the Airbnb was huge, housing many men. He pointed out one of the beds in the corner, where he himself slept, saying it belonged to a younger, newer guy, but that he was technically the young man’s boss and he “had to earn it.” He then explained that employees get better bedrooms based on their company ranking.
His explanation didn’t add up
He had previously mentioned that one of his coworkers, a “brokie” he’d been riding around with, had no money and he had been paying for all his gas. Yet, this “brokie” had his own upstairs bedroom and bath, while he was sleeping in the basement.
When Maddie pressed him on this inconsistency, he simply said it was his choice; he let the “brokie” have the upstairs room because he would be there longer. He also claimed that while he technically worked for this company, he actually owned his own business through the company, a concept Maddie found impossible to explain because “it’s not real.”
Maddie’s video ended on a cliffhanger, with the promise of a part two. Viewers reacted with an overwhelming mix of shock, laughter, and strong validation. Many commenters quickly labeled the man a “walking red flag factory,” praising Maddie for trusting her gut instincts and doing her research beforehand.
